PRESS RELEASE: A worldwide new high-speed internet connection has lifted danish research into the international premier league. The connection makes it possible for Danish researchers to exchange giant amounts of data with researchers on an international level.
For year’s Danish research have lacked high technology tools with enough capacity to store and transmit giant amounts of data. But on November, 11th. the Danish Research Network launched a new high-speed network with worldwide connections.
The new network makes it possible for Danish researchers to transmit large amounts of data both national and international without dislocation in time and space.
The network technology behind the connection is called Lambda-network (light with multiple wawe lengths) and has a capacity of gigantic 20x10 Gbit/s compared to earlier 2 Gbit/s. The new connection can be upgraded to even higher capacity.
“It is a big step forward for Danish researchers. With the new network they will be at the same level as the best countries in the world. The improved capacity grants the researchers new possibilities for collaboration and exchange of knowledge and research results national and international. At the same time the new technology is a necessary protection of the future for Denmark. It allows us to meet the expected technological development and ensure that we in this area continuously will be among the bests in the world” explains Børge Obel, chairman of the steering committee and dean at Aarhus School of Business, University of Aarhus.
The use of high-speed internet connections is widely spread internationally, where especially the research institution CERN is known for its extensive data transmissions. CERN, known in the media especially for its scientific experiments to reconstruct the creation of the universe, generates so large data amounts, that the only way to handle them is a extensive distribution through high speed connections.
